Gelcoat wordt toegepast in mallen. Na het aanbrengen van losmiddel in de mal wordt als eerste laag gelcoat toegepast. Daarna de polyester lagen. Als het product uiteindelijk uit de mal wordt gehaald, is de gelcoat de hoogglanzende buitenlaag.
